The best TOEFL vocabulary list of all time...

The Academic word list is simply the best vocabulary list of all time.

I'm not kidding. This list is taken from the most common academic words used in American college textbooks.

And the TOEFL iBT focuses on this type of vocabulary. So don't waste your time studying other lists. This is the best list to study.

Trust me. This is where you want to start.

Some examples of the words are...

Arrive early and get good sleep the night before the TOEFL iBT

derektejfi的網路日誌 - 高雄 2: "Thank god! I arrived at TOEFL center 30 minutes earlier.
There were bunches of papers to fill out. They are nothing
compared to test. It was totally 3 and half hours long!
Front and back! I’d done the practice test; however, I didn’t
do it all. I felt I was in trouble. I couldn’t keep the
concentration as long as almost 4 hours."

Good advice before you take the long test.
This is why it is so important to take practice tests so you get the experience of taking a test for four hours. This will improve your concentration.

Can video games help you pass the TOEFL?

Strange but true. The answer is yes.
Certainly worth a try. If nothing, else, it would be fun.

The Totally Unorthodox English Teacher: a resource site: "While it maybe hard to believe, many of my former students swear that one of the easiest ways to
study for the Toefl is to play computer video games. The game most cited is Civilization II,
with its complex vocabulary and difficult game plan (you have to take a civilization from the
caves to spaceflight) it has been said that after playing Civilization II the Toefl is a breeze."

TOEFL Prep Links

TOEFL Prep Links: "There are many sites on the World Wide Web which help students to prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Since June, 1998, most students have to take the test on a computer (CBT). As part of a good test-prep plan, you should spend some time exploring the resources in the tables below."

This a great list of sites that will help you.

Be sure to take earplugs when you take the Test!

Free TOEFL Help Forum: "I highly recommend to take a pair of good earplugs to the exam because you will be very surprise how much noise you will have in the classroom. I couldn't concentrate at all on my reading and writing sections because people right next to me where doing their speaking part and they were talking very loud. I was under a lot of stress all this time. Please, if anyone had better conditions, e-mail me and let me know the name of the testing center if it’s in New York."

Study for the TOEFL iBT with Kaplan

The book I will write my first review on is Kaplan's TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM.

While this book did not get good reviews on Amazon, I like the book for a few reasons.

  1. It has audio practice. This way you can listen to questions. This is very important because you will be tested on your listening skills.
  2. It has lots of example essays. Write these out in your own handwriting everyday and you'll improve your writing immediately.
  3. It is filled academic skills like skimming and outlining. While these are not the traditional TOEFL grammar ideas, they are very useful for preparing for the writing and speaking tasks.
  4. It has a computer program that replicates the TOEFL iBT. Good practice.
  5. It is cheap. Only $23 on Amazon.com.
The Longman by Phillips looks good also.
Maybe I can get it free from the publisher. Oh the perks of being a professor.

What is the TOEFL iBT?

The TOEFL iBT is the new TOEFL test for everyone. It is so different than the old test in so many ways that you need a new study program altogether.

There is no more structure section so your grammar is not tested.

However you have to write 2 essays.
You need to speak correctly- yes your speaking is tested.
You need to listen and answer questions about an academic lecture and conversations.
You will have to read academic level texts and answer questions about them.

It is difficult. No doubt about it. Based on my research so far, this test really does assess how prepared you are for English at the university level.

As a college professor, I have been teaching academic level English for years. My students are very successful at writing essays and improving their reading.

And after just teaching in Southern California, I am now ready to start sharing my teaching to the rest of the world. Check back to this blog. Because, I will be putting up free TOEFL lessons shortly.

I can help you prepare for the TOEFL iBT. I promise.

Why do TOEFL students make this mistake?

I was at my college the other day and saw some international students studying.
They had a TOEFL book. The funny thing is that it was for the TOEFL paper test.

Listen.....
There is no more TOEFL paper test!!! You are wasting your time if you
are studying this.

When you take the TOEFL now. It will be the TOEFL iBT. You need
to be studying for this exam which is very, very different than
the paper exam.

Ask your teacher why you are studying for the paper exam. You need to be studying for the TOEFL iBT.

More tips to come.

What you need to know about the future of TOEFL

In 1998 ETS started giving the TOEFL test on computers.
The reason for this was that it is faster, more reliable,
and easier to administer.

There are only a few countries that give a paper based

So realistically, you will take the TOEFL test on computer.
But don't worry, they have made it very easy to take.

When will the test change in my country?
